The Film Gallery is pleased to host 250 Installed Instants, an exhibition curated by Prosper Hillairet and Mélanie Forret.
In 2018, the first ‘Instant’ appeared on a YouTube channel. There are now 250. These images, originally recorded by Prosper Hillairet over his life, capture moments long forgotten or dissolved in the mist of the past. At first obscure and confusing, some sequences returned over time, like spectres. Why these moments? The filmed event, a light, a movement, a color, sounds, an atmosphere, the unusual, the way these elements come together. They become more than recordings. They become Form. Moments that gained autonomy and new treatment thanks to Mélanie Forret.
The series evolved when other participants contributed their own Instants. In 2022, about fifty were screened at Studio des Ursulines in Paris, forming a ‘community’ of Instants. These Instants can now be grouped by themes or programs, for example the city, nature, journeys, transportation, the sea, rain, etc.
Today, it seems interesting to present them as an installation, following their presentation online and on the big screen, occupying the space of The Film Gallery, responding to one another, moving from succession to juxtaposition, and creating new correspondences.

« Les Instants installés »
de la succession à la juxtaposition
En 2018, le premier « Instant » était mis en ligne sur une page youtube, qui en compte désormais 250. À l’origine, des images enregistrées par Prosper Hillairet au fil de la vie. Images et moments oubliés ou dissous dans la brume du passé. Mais, obscurément et confusément d’abord, puis clairement, s’est enclenché un lent processus où certaines séquences revenaient comme des spectres. Pourquoi ces moments là ? L’événement filmé, une lumière, un mouvement, une couleur, des sons, une ambiance, de l’insolite, une composition de ces traits. Ces moments excédaient leur seul enregistrement pour devenir Forme. Moments qui alors devenaient autonomes et pouvaient faire l’objet d’un traitement particulier, en collaboration avec Mélanie Forret.
La série prend une nouvelle tournure lorsque des propositions d’Instants arrivent par d’autres participant.e.s. En 2022, une cinquantaine de ces Instants ont fait l'objet d'une projection lors d'une soirée au Studio des Ursulines.
Se crée alors une « communauté » des Instants.
Les Instants peuvent désormais former via des thématiques, des programmes, par exemple, la ville, la nature, les trajets, les transports, la mer, la pluie, etc.
Il nous paraît aujourd’hui intéressant de proposer la vision de ces Instants (après internet et la salle de cinéma) sous forme d’installation où les Instants prennent place dans l’espace, où ils se répondent formellement, passant de la succession à la juxtaposition. Où se construisent de nouvelles correspondances entre les Instants ainsi ex-posés.
