Artificial Spectator: How Computers Look at Art
This Friday, Dongguk University will host a special lecture by a world-famous celebrity.
Dr. Lev Manovich, a scholar of digital culture theory and a pioneer of big data visual culture, will give a face-to-face special lecture on Friday, October 22 at 2pm in the Deogam Seminar Room on the first floor of the Cultural Center.
As a professor at the City University of New York's Graduate School, he is a digital, art, and media expert who has been dubbed "the most suggestive and broad-ranging media historian since Marshall McLuhan." He personally pays a visit to Dongguk University to give a special lecture on how to view art using computers.
He invites everyone who is interested in new media, virtual reality, augmented reality, and the future of media content.

레프 마노비치 박사는 디지털 문화 이론의 석학이며, 빅 데이터를 활용한 시각 문화 연구의 선구자이다. 그는 2013년에 '디자인의 미래를 만드는 25인', 2014년에 '미래를 만드는 가장 흥미로운 50인' 목록에 올랐다. 그는 14권의 책을 집필하거나 편집했는데, '문화 분석', '인공지능 미학', '소프트웨어 문화 이론', '인스타그램과 현대적 이미지', '소프트웨어가 우리를 지배한다', '소프트 시네마: 뉴 미디어 언어와 데이터베이스 살펴보기' 등이 있다. 특히 마지막 책은 그를 "마셜 매클루언 후로 가장 광범위하고 예지적인 미디어 역사가"라는 평을 받도록 했다. 그는 뉴욕시립대학교 대학원에서 총장급 교수를 맡고 있으며, 문화 분석 연구소의 소장이기도 하다. 문화 분석 연구소는 뉴욕 현대미술관과 뉴욕공립도서관을 비롯한 많은 기관을 위한 프로젝트를 진행했다.
About Our Lecturer, Lev Manovich

Member of the PhD Program in Computer Science, MS Program in Data Science, MS Program in Data Analysis and Visualization and MA Program in Digital Humanities.
Dr. Lev Manovich is leading theorist of digital culture, and a pioneer in using big data to study visual culture. He was included in the list of "25 People Shaping the Future of Design" in 2013 and the list of "50 Most Interesting People Building the Future" in 2014. He is the author and editor of 14 books including Cultural Analytics, AI Aesthetics, Theories of Software Culture, Instagram and Contemporary Image, Software Takes Command, Soft Cinema: Navigating the Database and The Language of New Media which was described as "the most suggestive and broad-ranging media history since Marshall McLuhan." Manovich is a Presidential Professor at The Graduate Center, CUNY, and a Director of the Cultural Analytics Lab. The lab created projects for the Museum of Modern Art (NYC), New York Public Library, and other organizations.
Directions: from Subway line 3 Dongguk University Station exit 6 take the escalator up the hill, follow the path to the large tree and the Lee Haerang theatre, this is the Munhwagwan building - continue along the building to the side entrance and proceed to the seminar room at the far end of the hallway.
