The Film Gallery and the European Film Festival in Paris, L'Europe autour de l'Europe, are pleased to present an exhibition by Knutte Wester (b. 1977), opening Friday, April 5th, and on view through April 15th.

In a City Without Name will feature three notable video installations of the Swedish artist and filmmaker: 'You Can't Show My Face' (2021), 'A Bastard Child' (2016) and 'Dawn in a City Without Name' (2014). Each film work delves into the distinct characteristics of urban landscapes worldwide, from building a fantasy utopia through rap music and dance under a totalitarian regime to the challenges faced by a child born to an unmarried mother, or the sorrow of a stray dog having lost its companion in a car accident. Accompanying the cinematic work will be a series of forty-six hand-painted watercolour images, selected from a larger collection of 800, inspired by Wester's grandmother and animated to bring his film 'A Bastard Child' (2016) to life.

In conjunction with the exhibition, four screenings will take place during the European Film Festival on Thursday, April 4th, at Le Studio des Ursulines, 10 rue des Ursulines, 75005 Paris: 'Where the Border Runs' (2016), 'Dawn in a City Without a Name' (2014), 'You Can’t Show My Face' (2021), 'A Bastard Child' (2016). Following this, there will be a special screening on Wednesday, April 10th, at The Film Gallery, where Knutte Wester will present his ongoing film project, 'The Border Within Us'.

Presented on the occasion of the 19th edition of the European Film Festival in Paris, L'Europe autour de l'Europe, the exhibition Knutte Wester: In a City Without Name has been prepared in close collaboration with Irena Bilic and with the support of the Swedish Institute in Paris.

The Film Gallery et le Festival de films européens de Paris, L'Europe autour de l'Europe, ont le plaisir de présenter une exposition de Knutte Wester (né en 1977), qui ouvrira le vendredi 5 avril et sera visible jusqu'au 15 avril.

Dans une ville sans nom présentera trois installations vidéo notables de l'artiste et cinéaste suédois : 'You Can't Show My Face' (2021), 'A Bastard Child' (2016) et 'Dawn in a City Without Name' (2014). Chaque oeuvre cinématographique explore les caractéristiques distinctes des paysages urbains à travers le monde, allant de la construction d'une utopie fantastique par le biais de la musique rap et de la danse sous un régime totalitaire aux défis rencontrés par un enfant né de mère célibataire, ou à la tristesse d'un chien errant ayant perdu son compagnon dans un accident de voiture. Accompagnant le travail filmique, une série de quarante-six images à l'aquarelle, choisies parmi une plus grande collection de 800, inspirées par la grand-mère de Wester et animées pour donner vie à son film 'A Bastard Child' (2016).

En conjonction avec l'exposition, quatre projections auront lieu lors du Festival du Film Européen le jeudi 4 avril, au Studio des Ursulines, 10 rue des Ursulines, 75005 Paris : 'Where the Border Runs' (2016), 'Dawn in a City Without a Name' (2014), 'You Can’t Show My Face' (2021), 'A Bastard Child' (2016). À la suite de cela, il y aura une projection spéciale le mercredi 10 avril à The Film Gallery, où Knutte Wester présentera son projet cinématographiques en cours, 'The Border Within Us'.

About the artist

Knutte Wester (born in 1977 in Sweden) is a contemporary artist and filmmaker. He pursued his art education from 1998 to 2003 at the Umeå Academy of Fine Arts and the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Wester's artistic focus revolves around society and its sites of defeat. His creative process often involves collaborations and spans across various mediums, including video, sculpture and installation. Regardless of the medium, his works consistently contain a documentary element. He has directed several acclaimed films, such as 'Dawn in a City Without a Name' (2014), awarded at the Tempo Documentary Film Festival in Stockholm in 2024, and 'You Can't Show My Face' (2021), premiered at DOC NYC in New York, and awarded the SAUVAGE CORTO Prize at L'Europe autour de l'Europe in Paris in 2021.

Knutte Wester (né en 1977 en Suède) est un artiste contemporain et cinéaste. De 1998 à 2003, il a étudié l’art à l’Académie des beaux-arts d’Umeå et à l’université Wits de Johannesburg. L’art de Knutte Wester porte sur notre société et sur ses lieux de défaite. Son travail prend souvent forme dans le cadre de processus, fondé sur la collaboration. Il travaille avec la vidéo, la sculpture et l’installation. Quelle que soit la technique, il y a toujours un élément documentaire dans ses œuvres. Il a réalisé de nombreux films récompensés, dont Dawn in a city without a name (Tempo Documentary Film Festival 2014) et You can’t show my face (première au DOC NYC à New York, prix SAUVAGE CORTO au festival L’Europe autour de l’Europe 2021).
